Summer Band Camp is for middle and high school students who want to become more proficient on their instruments and develop increased confidence and ability playing in ensembles. It is also for students who have been playing in band and want to experience playing in smaller chamber groups. At our summer band camp program, students will . . .

Play in large and small ensembles. All students will spend time each day in both small ensemble (i.e., woodwind ensemble, brass quintet, saxophone quartet, flute choir, etc.) and large ensemble (all instruments – full band). We will create the small ensembles based on enrollment. Any ensembles that want to continue rehearsing and performing after camp is over will be encouraged to do so!

Learn supplementary skills. Choose TWO from:

  • Group Piano. Learn piano with Vitaly Serebriakov, DHCSM artistic director and artist-in-residence with the Scottsdale Philharmonic.
  • Conducting. Learn how to conduct with Cactus Shadows Director of Bands Andre Womack. By understanding how to lead a group from the front, students will gain the confidence and skills needed to lead sectionals in their bands, as well as become better followers of others.
  • Music Theory. Gain a deeper understanding of the language of music by diving into the elements that form melody, harmony and rhythm and much more.

Become ready to join band next year. This is a great camp for young musicians who will be joining band in August and who want to start the school year with confidence.

Work with internationally recognized teaching faculty and top music teachers from around the valley.

Attend daily professional performances. From 12:00-12:30pm Monday through Thursday (June 5-8), students will attend performances by professional musicians and DHCSM faculty, including Vitaly Serebriakov (piano, serebriakov.com), the Fountain Hills Saxophone Quartet (saxophones, fhsaxophones.com), and more. On Friday, the performance will run from 12-1pm and will feature all student groups, performing pieces they have worked on through the week. All performances are free and open to the public. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend the performances during the week before 12:30 pick-up.

Intergenerational Beginning Strings Workshop welcomes students ages 8 through adult. Learn to play violin, viola, cello or double bass with Brynn Cannon (violin/viola), former principal viola for Kirkland Symphony, Orchestra Seattle, Puget Sound Symphony, and Lyric Arts Ensemble, and with Gregory Hamilton (cello/bass), associate professor of cello and bass at Concordia College. By the end of camp, students will be able to play simple songs and will have a strong foundation for continuing study of their chosen stringed instrument.

Workshop is aimed at anyone wanting to start playing a stringed instrument.

Instruments will be available for rent on site for $50 for the week.

Students will learn:

  • Proper instrument posture
  • Bow hold
  • Left hand finger position
  • Production of adequate sound
  • An awareness of where the notes lie in first position
  • How to play some simple tunes

By the end of camp, students will have a strong foundation for continuing study of their chosen stringed instrument. School-age students will gain the skills they need to join their school orchestra program and be able to play music on day one.
